How to Spend 4th of July in Garfield County, Colorado: A 4-day Itinerary

This Independence Day, celebrate freedom in the heart of the Rockies. Say goodbye to the hurley burly of life and take it to the mountains. 4th of July in Colorado’s Western Slope means peace and serenity, connecting with nature, and exploring the beautiful outdoors. If that sounds like your jam, we invite you to visit us at Parachute, Colorado — a quiet community nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains just north of the Colorado River.

Go off the beaten path and away from the city buzz. Ditch the glamorous fireworks and trade it with starry nights. Ditch Netflix or Amazon and trade it with walks in the wild. Ditch the crowd and trade it with meaningful community events that celebrate the true meaning of the day.

A treasure trove of mountains, mesas, and canyons, you’re in for a 4th of July celebration like no other. Here’s our suggested itinerary for your 4th of July weekend getaway at Colorado’s Western Slope.

Day 1: Saturday, July 1st – Walks, Hikes, or Golf

Explore Parachute

Start your weekend by getting acquainted with the peaceful community of Parachute. Take a leisurely stroll through town and enjoy the small-town charm. Don’t be shy to ask our front desk about things to do or hiking trails nearby.

Play golf or try at Battlement Mesa Golf Club

If you’re a golf enthusiast or looking to try your hand at this relaxing sport, head to Battlement Mesa Golf Club. Tee off amidst breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and enjoy a day on the green.

Take a hike at Rifle Falls State Park

For nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, a visit to Rifle Falls State Park is a must. Explore the park’s scenic trails that wind through this breathtaking park, marvel at the majestic waterfalls, stroll along the lush forest paths, and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. It’s the perfect way to connect with nature and kick off your 4th of July getaway in Colorado’s Western Slope.

Day 2: Sunday, July 2nd – A day at Palisades

Go on a winery and orchard tour

Colorado’s wine country, Palisade, may not be as well known as Napa, but it’s just as magnificent. It’s quaint, charming, more outside the box, and definitely less intimidating. Here are some notable wineries to visit:

    • Talon Wines at the Meadery
    • Varaison Vineyards & Winery
    • Sauvage Spectrum
    • Colorado Vintners
    • The Ordinary Fellow
    • Restoration Vineyards
    • Carlson Vineyards Winery
    • Colterris at the Overlook
    • The Blue Beryl Winery

There are plenty of local businesses offering fun winery tours as well. Hop on a horse-drawn carriage by JR’s Carriage Service, a pedicab by Palisade Pedicab, a limo, or a shuttle and explore the best wineries and tasting rooms in Palisade.

In between the sipping and riding, make sure to visit a Palisade orchard too. Check out Pali-Tours’ Fruit Loops package, where they take you on an orchard adventure where peaches, cherries, and apricots abound.

Visit Palisade Farmer’s Market:

For a taste of the local produce and artisanal products, visit the Palisade Farmer’s Market. Stroll through the market, meet local farmers and artisans, and pick up some fresh fruits, vegetables, and handmade crafts to take home.

Day 3: Monday, July 3rd – Outdoor fun at Glenwood Springs

Go on a rafting trip in Glenwood Springs

Join a guided rafting trip on the Colorado River and navigate through exciting rapids while enjoying the stunning natural scenery. You can check out Whitewater Rafting, LLC, for tours. They’ve been operating since 1974, so you know they know what they’re doing. They offer half-day tours and full-day tours, but we suggest doing the half-day tour, which takes roughly 3 hours, so you’ll have time to explore the town and visit Glenwood Hot Springs after.

Take a dip at Glenwood Hot Springs

After your rafting adventure, soothe your muscles and relax at Glenwood Hot Springs. Take a dip in the healing mineral waters of these natural hot springs while enjoying the beautiful views. There are two major resorts in the area: Iron Mountain Hot Springs and Glenwood Hot Springs Resort

Day 4: Tuesday, July 4th – Choose your 4th of July Celebration:

Downtown Grand Junction Fourth Of July Parade and Ballgame:

Celebrate the 4th of July with America’s favorite pastime – baseball! The Grand Junction Jackalopes have games on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at Suplizio Field. Watch them play the Rocky Mountain Vibes and the Orem Owls, and enjoy a fireworks show after the 4th of July game.

On the 4th, wave your American flag high and cheer on the creatively decorated floats, marching bands, and local community groups as they make their way through the streets of Grand Junction.

Plateau Valley Heritage Days Celebration

For a more intimate and rustic experience, head to the Plateau Valley Heritage Days Celebration. This event embraces the region’s rich history and traditions. Enjoy old-fashioned games, live music, delicious homemade food, and friendly competitions. To date, they still haven’t released their 2023 schedule. Visit their website before heading out for the schedule.

Glenwood Springs’ Fourth Of July Laser Show

For a dazzling display of lights and colors, head to Two Rivers Park at Glenwood Springs for their Fourth of July Laser Show. Set against the backdrop of the Colorado River and majestic mountains, this dazzling display combines lasers and music for a truly unique experience. The celebration kicks off at 4:30pm with Super Fiesta Bounce Houses, Wood & Steel Axe Throwing, lawn games, DBA Face Painting Creations, and food & beverage vendors. At 6pm, live music begins with Delta Sonics followed by A Band Called Alexis at 7:30pm. Then, at 9pm, prepare to be amazed by the mesmerizing Laser Show illuminating the night sky. It’s an evening of entertainment and celebration under the stars.
